ALL STATE

This is the big daddy of junior high honor bands, with students selected from schools throughout all of California.  It is not easy to get in, but it is indeed a great privilege and thrill to be part of it.  The cost of this honor band will include hotel lodging if selected.  The kids are well-supervised and well-attended to throughout their 4 day experience.  

DATES: Feb. 15-18

LOCATION: San Jose, CA

STUDENT COST: $55 audition; if selected, $435 for hotel, food, etc.

DUE: Tuesday, Nov. 28th.

*The application process is very strict about adherence to details.  There will be more information about these details as we get closer. 

All Northern Honor Band

Dates: January 19-21st

Location: Delta College, Stockton

Note:  I am excited to have been chosen to conduct this honor band this year, having been asked 3 years ago.  Now that the time has come, I would love to have many of my own students share the experience with me. 

Cost: $40  (parents will need to work out supervision)

Audition is the same as All State

*This is our most local honor band and one which I hope many students will audition for.  Honor Bands are a great experience for students looking to stretch their musicianship.

The 3 honor bands available to our band students all use the same audition music, but the Capitol Section Honor Band cuts back the amount of the solo played, as well as the number of scales.  I do not yet know the cuts in the music for Capitol Section, but if you go to the CBDA link, you will be able to access the solo list and scales for your instrument.  I will provide more information later, but for those wishing to get started on practicing now, you have the link to steer you in the right direction.  Remember I will be happy to help you (as will a private teacher) as long as you ask me.   

NOTE:  Be sure to clear your dates before auditioning (you will sign a consent form).  Once you submit your recordings, you are expected to follow-through with this commitment if you are selected.  Remember that more kids are turned away than are taken in these honor settings.

 

 

For each honor band, you will need to record a specific chromatic scale, 1 or 2 specific major scales (note: you must play them in the style and rhythm indicated!), and solo excerpts as indicated.  You will be given specific instructions for each audition.

Most instrument solos come from CONCERT AND CONTEST, (Voxman) for your own instrument (Trombones need the Baritone Bass Clef Book this year!).
