Holiday Charity Drives at Olympus

Holiday Charity Drives at Olympus

Canned Food Drive (Nov. 4-10)
Each year our school district participates in a canned food drive to benefit families in need during the holiday season.  We had a brief pause in this tradition last year, and we are so happy to bring it back this year.  Our goal for Olympus is to bring in over 1,000 canned food items.  We need everyone's help in reaching our goal.  The canned food drive will run from this Thursday, 11/4, to Wednesday 11/10.  Students are to place their canned food donations in the boxes of their 1st period class.  Items will be counted on Wednesday 11/10 and the 1st period class to get the most items will get a donut party.

No glass containers or perishables can be donated.  Please also check your donation items that they have not expired.  Canned items such as tuna, soups, fruit, vegetables, pasta sauce, etc are welcome.  Other non-perishables such as pasta, cereal, baking mixes, etc are great as well.  Eureka Union School District is partnering with our local Rotary and the Placer County Food Bank to help our families and community directly.

Penny War (Nov. 15-19)
For the past 9 years, we have held a fundraiser for the Granite Bay Holiday Gift Basket program – Penny Wars. This year we are having a 5-Day Penny War. The Penny War starts on Monday, November 15, and will wrap up by 1st period on Friday, November 19.  Here’s how it works…Each 1st-period teacher will have a container in their classroom to collect spare change.  The GOAL of the Penny War is to collect as many PENNIES as possible in your container and put as many NON-PENNIES in everyone else’s container. Money is worth “points” based on its monetary value.
Pennies = 1 point each
Nickels = -5 points
Dimes = -10 points
Quarters = -25 points
1 Dollar = -100 points
5 Dollars = -500 points
10 Dollars = -1,000 points
20 Dollars = -2,000 points
If a class brings in 100 pennies they earn 100 points.  Someone from a different class can “sabotage” the container with a $1 bill – wiping out their 100 points leaving them with a total point value of ZERO (but we have $2 raised for the charity!).  We will tally up the points for each class starting on Tuesday and post regular updates of the top 5 classes to the OJHS website each day.  There will be some special “twists” to the accounting of points throughout the week - encouraging classes to come up with strategies!  We wrap up the Penny War on Friday, November 15 with a final “raid” for the first 10 minutes of school.  In previous years we raised over $1600 in the last 10 minutes for a grand total of nearly $3000!
The class that has the most points at the end of the war will receive a donut party.  Again, all of the money goes to support the Granite Bay Holiday Basket Program that helps families of students in the Eureka Union School District.

Holiday Giving Tree
We need your help in supporting families within our Eureka community for the holidays! Please stop by the front office beginning November 8 to pick up a tag from our giving tree. We are accepting gift card donations which will go towards pajamas, toys, books, and family games. We are also asking for homemade holiday cards for our families. Please turn in gift cards and holiday cards by December 10.
