Bring Your Own Device (BYOD)

We are excited to announce the evolution of our one-to-one program, which will expand the Chromebook program that has served the school well during the last four years.  Olympus (and other schools throughout the Eureka Union School District) will adopt a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program starting in the 2017-2018 school year.  This means that families will be able to choose a device to bring to school from a list of recommended devices that meet minimum specifications. When we adopted the Chromebook program, it was clear that this was best device for Olympus at that time.  As technological tools and platforms have developed since then, Olympus has determined that a different approach to the one-to-one program will better serve the students and teachers.  We will now take advantage of more recent developments and trends in educational technology that offer a variety of options to better serve the learning needs and preferences of our students.  Please visit our website for more information about BYOD. http://olympus.eurekausd.org/Programs/Bring-Your-Own-Device-BYOD/index.html

Events/ Information

Every week our office will send out, via Remind, a weekly message called The Olympus Shout-Out!. This will provide school information such as athletic events, special activities, minimum days, holidays, and meetings, as well as provide critical information about what is happening at school.  These are brief, but packed with information and serve in lieu of paper copies of information being sent home!  We encourage parents to go to our new website

olympus.eurekausd.org click on “Shout-Out” under the Parents tab.

Fall Sports Tryouts

Tryouts and practice for Flag Football, Cross Country, and Girl’s Volleyball will be held right at the start of the school year.  Please visit the “Sports Zone” section of the Olympus website for more detailed information: http://olympus.eurekausd.org/Sports-Zone/ A completed Emergency Card must be completed before a student may attend practice or tryouts.

Food Service

EUSD contracts foodservice through the Roseville Joint Union High School District.  Students may purchase items from our snackbar at break and lunch.  Parents may load the student’s account online rather than carrying cash.  The students will need their 5-digit Student ID number to purchase items.  Go to the Parents tab on the Olympus website, then select MySchoolBucks to create or update your accounts.

Policies

Attendance

ATTENDANCE HOTLINE: 786-6006 or   http://olympus.eurekausd.org/About/Attendance/

If your child is ill, please call and leave a message. PLEASE STATE YOUR STUDENT’S NAME, REASON FOR ABSENCE, DATE, YOUR NAME, AND YOUR PHONE NUMBER.  The attendance secretary will listen to the messages each day. The District is only paid for students in their seats. We encourage parents to plan their trips and vacations around school hours. We do provide Independent Study Contracts for vacations (5 days or more from school) – please obtain these from the main office a minimum of 5 days in advance to leaving.

Dress Code

Please keep the following guidelines in mind when shopping for school clothes:

School is considered a place of business and student dress and behavior should be consistent with the situation.  The school encourages students to use good taste and common sense when dressing for school.  Under no conditions should clothing or personal grooming be a distraction, unsafe, immodest, or disruptive to the educational program.  If a student is found to not follow the above guidelines, they will be asked to fix the issue on their own.  If necessary, they may borrow PE clothes in the office.

  • For health and safety reasons shoes must be worn at all times.  Flip-flop sandals may be worn but you should have running shoes available for PE.

  • No torn or sheer clothing above the knee that may show skin beneath it.  Sheer tops may not show skin beneath it.

  • Students may not wear spaghetti straps, strapless or backless tops/dresses. Midriffs must be covered.

  • Pants/shorts/skirts must be worn with the waistband of the pants/shorts up around the waist – no “sagging” pants/shorts.

  • Shorts and skirts must be fingertip length at minimum (arm dropped to the sides, hem should reach fingertips)

  • Emblems, words and pictures on clothing should be appropriate for Junior High School students (i.e. no obscenities, vulgar language, indecency, innuendos, violence or drug and alcohol references).

  • No pajamas or slippers are to be worn to school unless for a “Spirit Day” designated by the Stu-Crew.

Homework

Parents or students may check the Olympus website as each teacher has their own web page where homework is posted daily.  Parents may request homework from the school when the child has been absent for 3 full days. Contact the main office with this request at 782-1667. Parents may check grades online through PowerSchool: https://eureka.powerschool.com/public/

Dropping Off Items for Students

Mornings can be hectic and it is not uncommon for student to forget items.  To help our students learn responsibility, we must offer them opportunities to be responsible and learn from their choices, decisions, and actions.  If you have to bring an item to school that your student forgot at home, please place the item on the table near the front office with their name on it.  We make every effort to limit the number or classroom disruptions - we will not send call slips to students for items that have been forgotten.  Please remind your student to check the front table near the office for items that you drop off for them.

Medication at School

By State Law, no child is allowed to take medication, including over the counter, at school without a form signed by the doctor and the parent. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS! These forms are available at the school office. Please do not send any medication with your child in his/her backpack.  This law is to protect all students and your cooperation is appreciated.

Check In Procedures

When a student arrives more than 30 minutes late for school (after 8:20

a.m.) the student must have an adult come in to the office to sign them in.

Check Out Procedures

If students must leave school at any time for any reason, the parent or guardian must come into the office and request to have the student released from class. It is recommended that the parent or guardian arrive a little early to allow time for the student to finish any tests or assignments they are working on. A note can also be sent with the student to present to the teacher so that preparation for that class are made at the beginning of class time. When it is time to leave school, parents must complete the sign-out sheet in the office. We cannot call a student out of class until the parent is in the office. Upon return, the parent and student must sign in at the office.  PLEASE TRY TO SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS AFTER 2:20 P.M.

If someone other than the parent is picking up the student, we must hear from the parent either by phone or by a note.

Transportation

The Eureka Union School District implemented a transportation fee program in 1996 for home to school service. The fee can be paid annually or semi-annually for a full-day or half-day pass.   For those students who will ride the District busses only occasionally, a single ride pass for 20 one-way rides is available.  Please submit your applications to the District Office Transportation Office, 5461 Eureka Rd., Ste. 2. Should you have any questions, please call 774-1231.

Free Milk/Lunch Program

The District provides free lunches for qualified students. This is not a federal program and you must fill out an application for both milk and lunch. Applications are available in all school offices and at the district office

Insurance

Insurance is not required, but you should realize the school does not carry accident insurance on individual children. California law requires that students participating in an interscholastic athletic event have insurance coverage of at least $15,000 for hospital medical expenses. This includes all athletic team members.  There is an insurance policy that is offered through the schools that meets these requirements.  The brochures are available in the office.

Please call 782-1667 or visit our website if you have any questions.  olympus.eurekausd.org

Again, welcome to Olympus Junior High School. With your involvement, we look forward to an excellent year.

Olympus is Named to 2016 California Honor Roll!Top of Page

Dear Parents,

On behalf of our entire school community I want to say congratulations to you and your students! Olympus was chosen by Educational Results Partnership (ERP) and the Campaign for Business and Education Excellence (CBEE) as a 2016 California Honor Roll recipient!

The California Honor Roll is part of a national effort known for its extensive and rigorous analysis of student achievement in public schools. Our school stood above other schools in the state because of our success in getting students to grade level achievement and beyond.

This year, the Honor Roll includes 1,866 public K-8 and high schools that are recognized for demonstrating consistently high levels of student academic achievement, improvement in achievement over time, and reduction in achievement gaps. The Honor Roll:

  • Includes a measurement of improvement
  • Is the only award given in collaboration with business leaders
  • Includes graduation and dropout rate data
  • No application process is necessary
  • Establishes a higher bar of performance than any other award
  • Takes into account equity and closing achievement gaps

We did not apply for this award (they found us!) and it is a great honor to have been chosen. We will be featured on the Honor Roll website and a banner has been designed for us to hang proudly at our school.

Thanks to the hard work of the students and teachers here at Olympus, we are being recognized for our achievement. This is a testament to the relentless focus on results that our school has shown over the years and to the hard work of our entire school community.

From all of us here at Olympus, I give heartfelt congratulations. Together, we are improving education for all students by sharing our success.

Sincerely,

Sean Healy
Principal, Olympus Jr. High School
